My cousin sent me an e-mail recently about his new home. It is next to a small lake or pond, which is evidently on the migratory path of about 75-100 Canadian geese. His problem is that the geese come into his yard, tear up his plants and grass and leave a big mess. I suggested he use a garlic pepper tea or NIMBY, but he is in the Northeast, so I don't know if that product is available or if it would even work. Anybody have a suggestion I could pass along?

Cindy, I found a page from Alaska fish & wildlife dept. that does a pretty good job of addressing the problem. I know nothing about the two repellent products they recommend so I can't condone them, but I like the landscaping and fencing advice.
In summary, geese like to graze on mowed, fertilized grass. Leaving tall native grasses and wildflowers at the pond's edge discourages them from coming onto the lawn to feed. Hedges or fencing can serve the same purpose.
Let us know how it turns out: it's an interesting question!!
