I'm trying to compile a list of clever ways people recycle things and I'd love to hear your ideas! I'll go ahead and get the list started:

- We seldom get around to reheating leftover vegetables, so now I just toss them in a bag kept in the freezer. When the bag is full, I use the vegetable mix to make stew or stir-fry.

- Wash out a gallon-size milk jug and cut off the top, leaving the handle intact. Can be used to scoop birdseed into the feeders.

To minimize trash, reduce size of containers (which saves resources and reduces weight for shipping) and to avoid paying for water, buy juices, etc. in frozen concentrated form. After use, remove metal ends from the usually paper or plastic can and recycle the lids. I toss the metal ends and other metal caps from glass jars, etc. in a used coffee can and when half or so full, smash the big can closed at the top and put it in recycle bin.

OK my turn..I pot up so many 1 Gal containers that it is hard to find enough things to block the large holes. The nursery containers holes are really large and when you add your soil media it washes out..
I have used Coffee filters to fix the problem. You can use the white ones (Bleached) or the off color(brown) ones (non-Bleached). You can even use, your morning coffee filters (Used) with some of the coffee grounds still in there.
Trust me on this one, they need to stay in the same coned up way you get them out of the bag. If they get to wet or lose there shape they are quite hard to get just right in the bottom of the nursery pots.
If you have small pots with just one hole you can use a small used tea bag. Good luck......

For one gal. containers I use newspaper to cover holes. I put them in thick and this way I am recycling, blocking the holes and helping the container hold moisture. For plants that like to stay moist longer I put more paper. Also, the worms like the paper after the plant finally goes in the ground. ( do not use the glossy adds!)
