I'm looking for some helps on how I could keep the tree that is in front of the house alive!!!
On the same spot in front of my house, slightly less than a year, I've tried to plant two 6-ft cedar elm trees, but no success on either of them -- they're all dead.
I've tried my best to take good care of the trees -- water it everyday (about 1 gal), occasionally fed it with the root stimulator. At the first couple of months, it was growing smoothly. But, for some reasons, within as short as two days time, all leafs dried out, and the tree was gone. In general, both trees encountered the same scenarios.
I need to buy another tree to replace the dead one, but the question is should I plant the new one on the same spot again? After all, I still struggle to know the real cause of death of the previous trees -- is it because the soil on that spot, I over watered, or ...????. Also, perhaps, I better buy other type of tree, instead of cedar elm?
Any feedback is high appreciated.
By the way, I'm in Plano, Tx.
Thanks

Hello Paul, The tree you selected was a good choice for our area. You might have over watered or under watered!!!!!
The best time to plant trees is in the Fall. I would suggest October or November. That way the trees roots will grow over the Winter months.
I would only water a newly planted tree every other day or as it needs it. I would water it deeply every time....Not just a gallon.......I don't think there is anything wrong with the area you planted your trees in....I would dig a ugly hole and plant the tree as deep as it was growing, in the container you bought it in. Never plant a tree lower in the hole, if you have to the root ball could be a little higher than the surrounding lawn area, but never deeper...
After you plant your tree add bark mulch (two or three inches) on top of the ground around the tree.
You need to construct a well or burm around the freshly planted tree to help it hold on to your waterings and the rain we all hope will come.
I hope this helps....Good luck......
