I live in central, west Arlington. I have a rather small backyard with 4 very large oak trees on the east side which almost completely canopy the yard. Right now the yard is mostly weeds and I would like to do something with it this spring. I am not really sure where to start except I imagine I need to get rid of the weeds and whatever pests might exist (I've definitely seen grubs). I would like to do some kind of low growing ground cover, as I am sure turf grass is out of the question due to the shade. I would appreciate any advice on how to begin to "re-build" my yard!

Also, Suzanne, don't worry too much about the grubs. Even if your yard is healthy there will be plenty of creepy crawly things in your soil... not all of them are harmful, especially if it's not an infestation.

You will probably want to remove as many of the weeds as you can. It'll be a little difficult since you have the trees nearby and you don't want to damage the roots.

I have actually taken over part of my (very shady) backyard that used to be grass. I actually put down several layers of newspaper and covered that with compost and mulch. I then waited several months before planting anything so the grass would be good and smothered and not pop up where I put holes to plant things. Yes, I will freely admit that I am lazy. :-)

Near the edges, I get grass peeping up now and then, but not too much so it's pretty easy to just pull. Other than that, it seems to be doing OK.

One thing you might consider is to do this to a small portion of your yard at a time and see how it goes. Native oaks just HATE being messed with, so you'll have to be careful not to change the grade of the soil too much, or the drainage, etc. It's probably good that you're thinking of ground cover... you can probably find something that takes a lot less water than grass, so it will also be better for your trees.

The ground cover you choose will probably be mostly a matter of taste. Be careful if you go to the big box stores with the garden centers... much of the ground cover you can buy there is pretty invasive. I have ivy in my back yard and it is gorgeous, but it also climbs up the trees and can smother them (so there's more maintenence to keep it out of the trees). Mondo grass is also something that you'll have forever, as is Asian jasmine. That's why I'd avoid all three of these.

If you go to one of the organic nurseries, you can pretty much browse around their shady section and pick whatever appeals to you because they'll be pretty good choices. Just ask if it's invasive: most of these guys are really helpful and knowledgeable. I think pigeon berry is really pretty (but it would take a bunch of it to cover your yard). Inland sea oats is another pretty shade plant, and it will spread. It's a grass that grows to about 2 ft. high: not a ground cover but would be pretty here and there.

I think woodbine is a native. Some people mistake it for poison ivy, but it's got 5 leaves instead of three. It will cover the ground, but will also climb the trees as well (it seems more well-behaved than the English ivy so it hasn't really been a problem in my yard). It loses leaves in the winter so if you want year-round coverage that probably won't do.

Ferns are pretty, too, and very low maintenance.

There are just so many plants. I'd recommend Redenta's here in Arlington (Arkansas just east of Green Oaks) or Green Mama's up in North Richland Hills (Davis Drive north of 820). Just tell someone what you're trying to accomplish and they'll be happy to help you find something you like.
