Japanese maples

Arlington Organic Garden Club: Organic Gardening Info: Japanese maples
By Laura NP on Saturday, January 18, 2003 - 09:53 pm:

I am wanting to add a Japenese maple to my landscape (under the canopy of existing mature trees) but am not certain of where to find a reputable retail source for buying my first one. Any suggestions of local (Fort Worth area) garden retailers that carry Japanese maples that do well in Tarrant county?

Also, if you have recommendations as to specific species (I'm wanting one that doesn't get too tall), that would be useful information to me as well. The spot I've picked out to plant the Japanese maple is on a fairly steep slope, but the soil is built up and well amended (lots of compost already added). The native soil (below 18") is clay with alot of rock in it so the drainage throughout the property (even not on the slope) is fairly well drained, at least for rocky clay soil that is.

Thanks in advance to any persons who respond.

Hi Laura. I have 3 or 4 different varieties of Japanese Maple in my yard, and all do very well here. I don't really know what the varieties are, but I got at least two of them at an Arlington nursery that is now out of business.

You really can't go wrong looking for trees at Redenta's Garden or Green Mama's Nursery -- most everything they have is well-adapted to here.

I've been thrilled with mine here: I've got a bunch of mature oak trees and they do very well, even with little supplemental water (I have no sprinkler system).

The name of his business is "Metro Maples". Email address is Kogetsu@Juno.com This man knows a great deal about the Jap. Maples and grows them too.... Good Luck.......

We have a beautiful Japanese Maple that was planted last spring. This year the leaves came in nicely but now they are all curled around the edge - some at the base of the tree seem to have shrivled up and some branches never had a leaf at all. The leaves are otherwise healthy looking i.e. no sign of bugs or spots (at least not that I have noticed). Any ideas on what is wrong with the tree? (We live in Connecticut - the tree has had plenty of water - there is a area of the trunk that has separated bark, but also doesn't seem to be diseased)
Thanks!
